CHRISTIJAN MAKES PODIUM COMPLETE AT LAUSITZ LAUSITZ, GERMANY, June 06 2004 – A quicker getaway of the Swedish Audi-driver at the start saw Christijan enter the first corner in second position. Because of an off-track excursion one lap later, the Dutch Mercedes-Benz worksdriver also had to let Gary Paffett pass him. Just as it looked like the race was slipping out of Christijan’s hands, the early pitstop of Mattias Ekström brought back the excitement. As Christijan’s Team H.W.A. had planned a different pitstop strategy as their Audi-rival, both Bernd Schneider and Christijan were able to fight their way back to the front.
After their second and final pitstop, Christijan and Bernd together drove quickly towards Ekström. In the final stages of the race, the hard but fair fight between the three DTM-drivers made the spectators get out of their seats. But as many times Christijan tried to get by, Ekström defended his position successfully in order to keep his second place safe. And he did. After 37 laps Gary Paffett was the first to finish, followed closely by Mattias Ekström, Christijan Albers and Bernd Schneider. Best Opel-driver today was 2002 DTM-champ Laurent Aiello who came home in fifth spot.
Christijan: “Should I be happy or should I be not? To be honest, I think I have to be quite pleased with this result, because of the problems we had during the race. As my pitlimiter didn’t work, I had to concentrate fully not to speed in the pitlane and get penalised for that. It’s a shame I lost the two points margin in the championship to Mattias, but I’m happy to not have lost more points with the things that occurred today.”
